In The Bathroom

Toilet Height

Toilet height issues. I don’t know about you but those toilet seat risers do not work for me. Yes they raise you up but I found the hole diameter to be too small for one to properly clean oneself after the deed is done. Solution: a raised toilet platform. Your plumber installs this platform at the base of your toilet. Again, your local hardware store should have these platforms and/or look online. There are varying heights to meet your needs.

Walk In Shower

If you need a walk-in-shower but all the pre-manufactured units do not fit your needs, look to have one custom made. That’s what I did. I went to the same utility trailer manufacturer that made the platforms for my kitchen chairs and together we drew up plans for what I specifically needed in a walk-in-shower. From the location of the grab bars, to the height of the water tap and corner shelves, all designed based on my particular needs.

Also, you can find online the collapsible rubber guard for the walk-in-shower edge and easily install that yourself. Overall I found the cost to be about the same as the pre-manufactured units, something to keep in mind if you are in need of a walk-in-shower. You can see pictures of my walk-in-shower below in the DIY shower chair.

DIY Shower Chair

I found the regular shower benches rather limiting in that you are continually facing the shower head. Because my arms and hand grip is weak, the option of a hand held shower wand is not practical. So what to do? I purchased an outdoor patio swivel stool, cut down the legs to suit my height, and voila, I can do a 360 while showering.

I also put rubber tips on the legs and sealed it with silicon to avoid rusting. Even though this is an outdoor patio chair, I do keep an eye on the swivel mechanism, lubricating it when necessary.
